Some movies and TV shows are Netflix original productions, and those can be found and streamed no matter where you live, as long as you have a Netflix subscription. Cause The Secret Weapon allready tried to do that and just ended up doubling down on the status quo.As you probably know, the content available on Netflix differs between countries. I think the notion of gender role in the Asterix universe would be really interesting to explore, because the comics have some great 2nd role female characters, and in a village where a Magic Potion gives you superhuman strengh, it would be interesting to ask why women and men are still limited so much in traditionnal gender roles (the men fights and go on adventure, the women stay at home, raise kids, do shopping and gossip).īut, you know, exploring it well. And they are a lot of the jokes that fall flat for me. I also don't like that Asterix and Obelix are secondary characters in their own movies.

Why?ĪLSO WHY DO THEY GET MARRIED AT THE END THEY ARE LITTERAL TEENAGERS (and don't say it's period accurate, the movie -and comics- swims in anachronism!) to just conform I guess? Goudurix has to face his fear in a traditionnal masculine way, and Abba has to become a damsel in distress. The setup is nice, with Goudurix and Abba having a similar problem of not conforming to gender roles and what is expected of them, but then the resolution is. I really like the high quality of the animation and the good pacing of this movie, but other than that, I find this movie too childish, don't really know why. We can get to know these characters more than we would in a 90 minute film, which I'd hope would give Asterix as a character- time to shine a bit more. One story can be spread over several episodes. TV- especially tv now- has a lot more narrative options than film. Its interesting how Mission Cleopatre is regarded as a classic- as we've seen this week! Despite it being live action, with a few modern twists, its very faithful to the beats of the book. Seeing what he was in the original in comparison- the inspiration for Justforkix getting over his fear, and providing the solution to get rid of the Normans-its just disapointing. And the misunderstood kid Justforkix becomes the hero at the expense of Asterix and Obelix to the point where Asterix is just a nag at some points in the film. Abba is fun, but she just becomes a girl that needs to be saved. The 'liar revealed' trope was very popular and is one i personally dont like.
The reason why I like Vikings less is because it bends the original story to fit a more movie conventional one of the time.

Perhaps its because its subtle, and doesn't fit into a conventional movie format? The best showcase for it was The Twelve Tasks- and while that was a film, it was more a series of sketches linked together. Many of the films feel like they have to fit a conventional mould that a lot of the time sacrifices the fun of the books, and Asterix's personality and cunning in particular. Youve got Tragicomix and Panacea getting captured by the romans in Vs Ceasar, and in Mansions of the Gods, as opposed to the book, Asterix's plan doesnt work, which leads to the whole village captured at one point.
The stakes have to be higher, the drama more dramatic. Buckle up kids! After Goscinny died, the films would often stray from the original book in favour of a more serious narrative, not unlike a disney or early don bluth film. I think it was because Uderzo thought it was a 'lesser' medium than film and believed movies were the only way to do his characters justice.
